Sure, the Motorola Atrix is a pretty slick piece of mobile hardware with that fancy lapdock, but why content yourself with a single conversion? The KT Spider takes things even further, offering both a tablet dock and a clip-on game controller.
Like the Asus PadFone, the KT Spider starts with a fairly simple screen-upsizing option: a 10.1″ tablet. Just slide the Spider into the back and the smartphone’s Android Gingerbread interface pops on to the screen. The same is true for the netbook dock, where the smartphone doubles as both the “brains” and a multi-touch touchpad. Last but not least is a Playstation-esque game controller, which uses Bluetooth connectivity to link up to the phone.
Battery issues needn’t concern you here, either. The Spider’s dock devices all have their own power packs as well (the tablet packs 6400mAh, for example).
While the docks are certainly cool, the real star of the show is the phone itself. It sports a gorgeous 4.5″ 1280×800 pixel display, dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, microSD expansion up to 32GB, and microHDMI output. Even with this kind of muscles crammed inside, the Spider is still just .37 of an inch thick.
Now for the good news/bad news. The spider launches in November or December, though only in Korea. KT is obviously hopeful other markets are a possibility, however, or they wouldn’t be showing off the platform at IFA 2011.
