HP TopShot LaserJet Pro multifunction lets you scan 3D objects

If you’re thinking of buying a printer and a scanner then the simplest option is to buy a multifunction device. That way you get print, scan, and copy functionality in one box. Over the years this all-in-one setup hasn’t changed much, other than prices coming down and print quality going up.
Now, HP is set to offer up something unique by adding a second scanner attached to the top of its new TopShot LaserJet Pro M275. This multifunction device retains the ability to print, scan, and copy documents, but it also adds the ability to scan 3D objects.
An arm sits above the device containing an embedded camera that allows you to scan in any 3D object small enough to sit below it and fit in an area no bigger than an A4 sheet of paper.
It’s a clever and novel idea. Want to show friends a picture of your new smartphone without searching the web for some images? Then just place your phone on top of the M275 and hit scan. The result will be a high-resolution 2D photo of your device created by combining 6 different images the camera takes from different angles and at different exposure levels.
HP boasts that the multiple image merge combined with image processing means the M275 produces better results than a number of digital cameras out there. There’s also software shipped with the device to allow the removal of the background leaving you with a clean object image.
As well as 3D object capture and printing, HP has added the ability to instantly upload a scan to the web. Clearly it sees the M275 as being very useful for anyone wanting to setup an eBay auction and needs to capture some shots of the object they are selling.
