Laser MIDI Guitar Pickup

An interesting device M3i has been released lately. The Optical Pickup is for now the most comfortable and efficient way to use your guitar as a MIDI controller. Everyone who tried to do this the regular way faced the problem of huge delay, which made it almost impossible to record something properly. The gadget above does not convert string vibrations into digital signal, but uses the Laser Pitch Detection (LPD) system. The laser beam goes right under each string and measures the distance between the diode and the pressed fret, thus converting it into the pitch. So, if there is no conversion going that means there can’t and will not be any delay. You won’t even have to tune your six string beauty. And as a bonus, it looks cool when you use it in the dark.

Turning your guitar into a MIDI instrument opens new opportunities in sound but, as a guitar player myself, I wouldn’t be adding any more electronics than there already is. Buy yourself effect pedals or a guitar processor and be happy. Turning a guitar into MIDI instrument is more like a “I don’t have money to buy a synthesizer” variant. Decision is yours.
